NAT13National/CrimeAged weaver killed for refusing to pay for Durga PujaKolkata, Oct 12 IANS An aged weaver was allegedly beaten to death by 12 members of a Durga Puja committee in a West Bengal village after he refused to contribute money for the festival, the police said Sunday.The incident took place at Hatshimla village in Bardhman district's Kalna town, about 165 km from here. "A murder case has been filed against 12 members of Ashish Sangha, a local club, who beat to death Santosh Das, 75, Saturday night after he refused to shell out Rs.1,001 as subscription money for Durga Puja," Rathindranath Mukherjee, inspector-in-charge of Kalna police station, told IANS Sunday. "The club members had earlier gone to his house demanding the money on Shashthi Oct 5. Das, a weaver by profession, gave them Rs.151. But again the youths went to his house Saturday night demanding Rs.850," Mukherjee said. They beat up Das with sticks and iron rods. He received severe head injuries and died on the way to hospital.
