Supreme Court notice to Tamil Nadu Government on Rajiv assassination case
New Delhi, Oct 17 ANI: The Supreme Court today issued notice to the Tamil Nadu Government on a plea by P R Ravichandran, convicted for the May 1991 assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, who has sought his release from jail after serving a 14-year term. In his petition to the bench of Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan, Ravichandran contended that the Tamil Nadu Government was not taking a decision on his release despite the completion of his life sentence. Earlier, Ravichandran had filed a petition asking the apex court to consider his plea as he had already served 14 years in jail. The apex court on May 12, 1999 had commuted the death sentence awarded by the designate TADA in Chennai to life term.Out of the 26 accused who stood the trial, the apex court had acquitted 19 of them in the case while awarding death sentence to four and life imprisonment to three. The death sentence was awarded to Nalini, her husband Murgan, Santhan and Arivu for the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi.Later, following a request by Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Nalini's death sentence was commuted to life-imprisonment on the ground that Nalini delivered a baby girl at the Vellore Central prison.
