Four jailed for landmine explosion in West Bengal

NAT61 National/Law/Crime Four jailed for landmine explosion in West Bengal Kolkata, Oct 24 IANS A West Bengal court Friday remanded four people to judicial custody and one person to police custody for a landmine explosion in West Midnapore district Wednesday in which three people were killed. According to the verdict of Jhargram Fast Track Court: "Four people were found indirectly involved with the Belpahari landmine blast. The court has decided to remand them to 14-day jail custody. Ashok Karmakar aka Babloo, who was passing all the information to the Maoists regarding blast-targets, has been remanded to 10-day police custody." Dhaniram Mandi, a doctor, Bharati Majhi, a nurse and Bapi Mishra, medical van driver, were killed on their way to Belpahari Health Centre from the adjoining Kishori village when their vehicle was blown up in a landmine blast around 3 p.m. Wednesday near Belpahari village, about 250 km from here. According to police officials, three of the five men were arrested Friday from different parts of the district, while two were arrested Thursday from the Jharkhand border, about 2 km from the explosion site. West Bengal Chief Secretary Amit Kiran Deb said a compensation of Rs.200,000 would be given to each of the families of the three killed in the blast. "The government has decided to give a compensation of Rs.200,000 each to the three families of the doctor, nurse and driver, who died in the blast. Besides, jobs will be given to a family member of the doctor and the nurse," Deb said at the state secretariat Friday. --Indo-Asian News Service bs/rd/jg 271 Words 24102041
